Many Fall Classes and Playgroups in Hoboken for Children
By Amy Faucher

Hoboken is truly a wonderful place to live for those of us with children. For many months of the year, my children and I can enjoy our urban lifestyle, walking all over town, playing in the park, eating lunch at an outdoor cafe, and bumping into friends all up and down Washington Street. Unfortunately though, as autumn progresses, those gorgeous fall days become few and far between. Suddenly I'm stuck in my house with my two children, trying my hardest to have them NOT watch too many videos, and at the same time trying to teach them that there's a way to play without taking out every single toy we own and mixing all the pieces together. I learned early on (maybe the first week of the first winter I spent at home with my kids) how important it is to have a plan for each day of the week. I got involved in a weekly playgroup, signed up for a music class, and realized that getting out of the house for these weekly events was very important to my sanity (and my children s). My children were able to spend time with their peers, and I was able to have some adult conversation with some other moms/caregivers.

Five years ago when my son was born, there were just a few options for classes for children, and now there seems to be so many to choose from. There are class for just about every age group, at every possible time of day. On the next page of this newsletter, there are some fall schedules for classes at Echo of Art, Music Together, Monroe Street Movement Space, the YMCA, and the Hoboken Public Library. Most classes require sign-up in advance and are organized into 8 or 10 week sessions.

If organized classes are not your thing (or your child's), and you just want social interaction for you and your child, there are many playgroups forming for all age groups (see article directly to left). Playgroups are a great way for mothers and caregivers to informally discuss the latest behavioral concerns of their similarly-aged children, or to just catch up on the latest Hoboken gossip. I always found playgroups to be a great time to gather information about the preschools in Hoboken, and I enjoyed hearing other parents perspectives on various parenting issues.

If you can't find the class or playgroup that you re looking for here in Hoboken, there are classes outside of Hoboken such as Tumblebee Gymnastics in Fort Lee, or Gymboree classes, which are all over NYC or in various suburbs of NJ.

If you are aware of any classes/programs in Hoboken that I may have neglected to include in this newsletter, please let me know, and I ll try to include the information in the October newsletter.
